Its complex history, vibrant food scene, and remarkable affordability make it one of Europe’s most compelling destinations.

## Overview

Sarajevo is extraordinarily affordable by European standards. The local currency is the Convertible Mark (BAM), pegged to the Euro at roughly 1.96 BAM to 1 EUR. Daily costs range from 80 BAM (~$45 USD) for budget travelers to 450 BAM (~$250 USD) for luxury visitors. Even mid-range travelers at $95/day will enjoy boutique hotels and excellent restaurant meals. The city is compact and walkable, further reducing costs.

## Daily Budget Breakdown

**Budget (80 BAM/day | ~$45 USD):** Stay in a hostel or guesthouse (25-45 BAM/night), eat ćevapi, burek, and bakery food (15-25 BAM/day), and use the tram (3-6 BAM/day). Most historical sites are free to visit from outside, and walking tours cost only tips.

**Mid-Range (175 BAM/day | ~$95 USD):** Book a boutique hotel in the Old Town (80-140 BAM/night), enjoy restaurant meals with Bosnian specialties (30-50 BAM/day), and use trams and occasional taxis (8-15 BAM/day). War history tours and museum entries run 10-25 BAM each.

## Where to Save

## Where to Splurge

A guided Siege of Sarajevo tour with a local who lived through the 1992-95 war (50-100 BAM per group) is the most powerful travel experience many visitors have ever had — deeply personal and historically essential. A full Bosnian feast with grilled meats, pita, and local wine at one of Baščaršija’s best restaurants (25-40 BAM per person) is a splurge by local standards but laughably cheap by Western ones. A day trip to Mostar and the Kravice waterfalls by private car (150-250 BAM) covers two of Bosnia’s most iconic sights.
