Location & First Impressions
Capitán Suizo Beachfront Boutique Hotel, a unique Costa Rican beachfront boutique hotel, is everything you imagine when you think of a trip to paradise. Located in the small beach town of Tamarindo, Guanacaste, this 4-star gem sprawls right along the pristine shores of Tamarindo Beach.
Taking in the sound of the waves and the beauty of the lush gardens that envelop the property makes you feel like you’ve scored re-entrance to the Garden of Eden. Getting off the grid is one thing, but at Capitán Suizo, you’ll forget the grid altogether.
The Check-in Experience
A welcoming check-in begins with the warm, friendly service you’ll enjoy during your stay. The staff, 95% of whom are Costa Ricans, are incredibly helpful, friendly, and happy to help you craft the perfect stay.
Capitán Suizo Beachfront Boutique Hotel offers the best luxury service in an informal atmosphere where it’s easy to relax and be yourself.
You’ll also quickly pick up on the loving care the staff puts into the property and the many creatures who consider it a haven. The welcome drink is always a nice touch and usually wins me over 10 out of 10 times.
Room Overview
Whether you seek a private beachfront bungalow or a four-bedroom suite for the entire family, Hotel Capitán Suizo has the exact Costa Rican beachfront experience you desire. Each of the property’s 35 spacious guest rooms has a king-size bed, locally sourced furnishing, and a beautiful balcony or terrace.
This is one of those places where you can expect excellent accommodations, no matter what size or style of room you choose. I enjoyed the design and style of the rooms as well.
With gorgeous views of the ocean and surrounding gardens, you’ll leave the sliding glass door open for the entire trip to take in the ocean breeze.
Amenities and Facilities
Hotel Capitán Suizo has all the amenities you need to enjoy an incredible vacation, even if you never leave the property. There’s a beautiful swimming pool on-site surrounded by plenty of native shade trees, not to mention the stunning beach just feet from your door.
Whether you’re in the mood for a massage, a facial, or a manicure, the hotel’s got you covered at their open-air Aromas Del Mar Spa. Rather than an onsite gym, the hotel partners with a nearby fitness center to offer complimentary access to all guests.
The entrance to the spa looks directly out to the beach, and I could hear the ocean waves during my massage. Pure bliss. Here’s how it looks walking into the spa.
Dining and Cuisine
You’ll find one of the best dining venues in town right on the property at Hotel Capitán Suizo’s El Barco Restaurant. The hotel’s free-roaming chicken farm keeps rolling in the great eggs you’ll enjoy at the breakfast buffet each morning, while its organic herb and vegetable garden supplies ingredients for its lunch and dinner cuisine.
Enjoy an extensive wine list and a menu of excellent, locally sourced international and traditional Costa Rican cuisine. Ensure you also stop by the bar or happy hour every day from 4 to 6!

Unique Selling Points
While there are plenty of great beach hotels along Costa Rica’s Northern Pacific shoreline, Hotel Capitán Suizo isn’t where you’ll have to fight other tourists for lounge chairs. It’s like a little tropical community where the staff will make you feel like family.
Aside from the gorgeous beach, my favorite part of the stay was the property’s incredible gardens. You’ll find everything from howler monkeys and iguanas to tropical birds and geckos hanging out in the beautiful native trees and plants that make the property so spectacular.
Here’s a picture of the monkeys hanging out by the pool:
Surrounding Area
The surrounding area is a paradise for outdoor adventurers and right next to downtown Tamarindo. You’ll enjoy endless opportunities to get out on the water, including surfing, scuba diving, or kayaking right outside the door of your room.
The staff is also great for helping you plan fun things to do in Tamarindo and excursions like ATV rides, sailing tours, or zip-lining adventures. Additionally, several gorgeous national parks are nearby, making great day trips for hiking, caving, or river rafting.

Is Capitán Suizo Beachfront Boutique Hotel Worth the Price?
Like many other hotels, prices at Hotel Capitán Suizo can fluctuate depending on when you plan to visit. I advise booking ahead because the hotel often reserves months in advance due to its smaller boutique status.
While you’ll find a selection of cheaper hotels in the area, I’ve always found Hotel Capitán Suizo worth the splurge. Even if you decide to go with another property, it’s worth checking out the hotel’s El Barco Restaurant to see the property yourself.
