Tamarindo, on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica’s Guanacaste province, is a laid-back beach town of fewer than 8,000 residents that grew from a quiet fishing village into the country’s surfing capital. Modern tourism took off in 1985, and the town gained cult status when it featured in the 1994 surf film The Endless Summer II. Its long main beach offers dependable waves for all levels, while across the estuary lies Las Baulas National Marine Park, a vital nesting ground for endangered leatherback turtles.
