Top experiences in Zakynthos
Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach)
The postcard of Greece. A rusty smuggler’s ship wrecked on a white sandy cove surrounded by towering cliffs. The water is an electric blue. Note: Beach access is currently restricted due to landslides; view from the top or boat.
Blue Caves
A series of geological formations along the coast. The water reflects the blue light onto the cave walls, turning everything sapphire. You can swim into the caves on a small boat tour.
Marathonisi (Turtle Island)
An islet in Laganas Bay shaped like a turtle. It is a main nesting ground for Caretta Caretta sea turtles. The water is Caribbean-clear. No humans allowed on the sand after sunset.
Gerakas Beach
A long, sandy beach at the tip of the Vasilikos peninsula. It is a protected marine park for turtles. No sunbeds or lights allowed near the nests. It is wild and beautiful.
Keri Caves & Myzithres
The dramatic cliffs of the southwest coast. The Keri Caves are deep and blue. The Myzithres sea stacks are breathtaking (especially at sunset). A popular spot for private boat rentals.

Culture, customs and safety
Cultural heritage
Zakynthos preserves Venetian architectural elegance rebuilt after 1953 earthquake, maintaining Ionian island cultural traditions through music, poetry, and maritime heritage. The island birthplace of national poet Dionysios Solomos inspired Greek national anthem. Venetian-influenced architecture features arcaded streets and bell towers. Traditional kantades serenading and mandolin music reflect Italian cultural fusion. Loggerhead sea turtle conservation at Laganas Bay demonstrates environmental consciousness. Orthodox monasteries, olive groves, and fishing villages maintain authentic island life beyond tourist beaches.
