The neighborhood guide

Kaleiçi

Kaleiçi is Antalya’s walled Roman-Byzantine old city, enclosing Hadrian’s Gate, a Roman harbor, Ottoman-era mosques, and restored 19th-century stone mansions converted to boutique hotels.

Kaleiçi, meaning “within the castle,” is Antalya’s enchanting old town quarter perched above the Mediterranean on Turkey’s southern coast. Over 2,000 years of continuous habitation have left layers of Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman architecture woven into its narrow cobblestone streets, creating a living museum framed by ancient stone walls and the glittering turquoise harbor below.

History buffs will find landmarks at every turn. Hadrian’s Gate, a triple-arched Roman triumphal arch from 130 AD, serves as the most famous entrance to the old town. Inside, the fluted Yivliminare Mosque minaret punctuates the skyline, while Hıdırlık Tower offers panoramic views over the marina and coastline. The compact Antalya Marina is lined with waterfront cafes and serves as a launching point for boat tours past the dramatic Düden Waterfalls, which cascade directly into the sea.

Kaleiçi is perfect for travelers who appreciate charm and authenticity. The local atmosphere draws couples, history enthusiasts, and photographers seeking Ottoman-era wooden houses draped in bougainvillea, artisan boutiques, and family-run restaurants serving fresh Mediterranean cuisine on rooftop terraces. The neighborhood feels worlds away from Antalya’s modern resort strip despite being just minutes from it.

The old town is best explored on foot — comfortable shoes are essential on the uneven cobblestones. Antalya’s modern tram system stops right at Hadrian’s Gate, connecting Kaleiçi to the bus terminal, the Konyaaltı beach strip, and the wider city. Taxis and dolmuş minibuses are readily available for reaching the airport or surrounding beaches.
