About
Brunswick, Georgia, is a historic port city on the state’s southern coast that serves as the mainland gateway to the Golden Isles, the barrier-island chain of St. Simons, Sea Island, Little St. Simons, and Jekyll Island. Founded in 1771 and laid out around stately squares, it is one of Georgia’s oldest cities and is wrapped in the salt marshes immortalized in Sidney Lanier’s poem “The Marshes of Glynn.” Downtown’s Old Town Historic District showcases Victorian architecture, antique shops, and live oaks draped in Spanish moss, while Mary Ross Waterfront Park overlooks the harbor with its Liberty Ship Memorial honoring the vessels built here during World War II. A working shrimping fleet keeps local restaurants stocked with fresh Georgia seafood, and the city lays claim to the hearty stew that bears its name, celebrated each year at the Brunswick Rockin’ Stewbilee. Travelers come for marsh sunsets, coastal cuisine, and easy access to the beaches and resorts of the Golden Isles.

Culture, customs and safety
Cultural heritage
Brunswick (Braunschweig) preserves its medieval identity as Henry the Lion’s 12th-century power base, where the bronze lion statue has guarded Burgplatz since 1166. The city’s Romanesque-Gothic cathedral houses Henry’s tomb alongside his wife Matilda of England. Half-timbered houses in the Magniviertel quarter showcase North German architectural traditions, while Dankwarderode Castle recreates medieval splendor. The Happy Rizzi House adds contemporary whimsy with James Rizzi’s colorful pop-art facade. Traditional Mumme beer, a non-alcoholic malt extract shipped globally since 1390, originated here. The annual Schoduvel carnival maintains Low German traditions with the Brunswick Till Eulenspiegel legend, whose pranks supposedly occurred in these streets.
Local customs & etiquette
In Brunswick, greet with ‘Guten Tag’ and maintain punctuality – it’s extremely important. Germans value directness and efficiency in communication.
