Centro Storico di Siena is the UNESCO-listed historic heart of one of Italy’s most perfectly preserved medieval cities. Virtually unchanged since the 14th century, Siena’s old town is a labyrinth of narrow red-brick streets, Gothic palaces, and hidden piazzas that descend toward the legendary Piazza del Campo — the sloping, shell-shaped square that serves as the stage for the Palio, one of the world’s most famous horse races, held every July 2 and August 16.

The Piazza del Campo is framed by the Gothic Palazzo Pubblico and the soaring Torre del Mangia, whose 400 steps reward climbers with a panorama over Tuscany’s rolling hills. Steps away, the Siena Cathedral (Duomo) is a masterpiece of Italian Romanesque-Gothic architecture, housing works by Michelangelo, Donatello, and Bernini. Its inlaid marble floor — uncovered for only a few weeks each year — is considered one of Italy’s great artistic treasures. Behind the Duomo, the Museo dell’Opera holds Duccio’s magnificent Maestà altarpiece.

Centro Storico Siena is best for art lovers, history seekers, and slow travelers who appreciate wandering without a fixed itinerary. Each of the city’s 17 contrade (historic districts) maintains its own identity, church, museum, and fierce Palio rivalry. Sienese cuisine rewards exploration: ricciarelli almond cookies, panforte spice cake, and pici pasta with wild boar ragù are local staples found in trattorias throughout the old town.

Siena’s old town is entirely car-free and best explored on foot. Buses from Florence, Rome, and the Tuscan hill towns arrive at Piazza Gramsci, a short walk from the Campo. The nearest train station, Siena Stazione, connects to the center via a quick bus ride or a 20-minute walk downhill.
