Marina Grande Capri

Marina Grande is Capri island’s main port and ferry hub, receiving hydrofoils from Naples and Sorrento, lined with colorful fishing boats, seafood restaurants, and the Roman-era Palazzo a Mare ruins nearby.

Marina Grande is Capri’s bustling gateway — the colorful harbor village where virtually every visitor first sets foot on this legendary Italian island. Nestled at the base of steep cliffs on Capri’s northern shore, this former fishing hamlet still wears its traditional character in the form of pastel-painted houses, bobbing fishing boats, and waterfront restaurants serving the morning’s catch alongside chilled Falanghina wine.

While most visitors hurry through to the funicular, Marina Grande rewards those who linger. The 5th-century Church of San Costanzo, dedicated to Capri’s patron saint, is one of the island’s oldest buildings. Nearby, the Phoenician Steps — 921 ancient stone stairs carved by Greek colonists — climb dramatically to Anacapri for the adventurous. The village’s public beach is Capri’s largest, and a handful of beach clubs rent sun loungers with views of the harbor traffic. Tour-boat operators along the quay offer trips to the Blue Grotto, Faraglioni rocks, and around the island’s entire coastline.

Marina Grande suits travelers who appreciate authentic, charming port-village atmosphere and want a convenient base for island exploration. It is especially appealing to couples arriving by ferry who want their first and last Capri impressions to be of turquoise water and lemon-tree terraces rather than designer shops. Families enjoy the beach and the easy access to boat tours.

The funicular departs from Marina Grande to Capri town’s Piazzetta every 15 minutes, taking just five minutes to climb the hill. Buses to Capri and Anacapri leave from the adjacent bus stop, and open-air taxis wait at the port. Hydrofoils and ferries connect Marina Grande to Naples (45 minutes), Sorrento (25 minutes), Positano, and Amalfi throughout the day.
