Old San Juan (Viejo San Juan) is the colorful, colonial heart of Puerto Rico’s capital, a 500-year-old neighborhood spanning just 17 square blocks on a narrow islet connected to the mainland by bridges. Founded in 1508 by Juan Ponce de León, it is the oldest European-established settlement in the United States and its territories — a place where Spanish colonial fortresses, cobblestone streets paved with blue adoquine stones, and candy-colored row houses create one of the Caribbean’s most photogenic neighborhoods.
Two massive Spanish forts define the skyline. Castillo San Felipe del Morro, perched on a headland above the Atlantic, and Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish-built fortress in the Americas, are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites and open to visitors for a combined $10 pass. Between them, the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista — the oldest cathedral in the United States — holds the tomb of Ponce de León himself. Calle Fortaleza, the neighborhood’s most photographed street, runs between pastel facades to the Governor’s Mansion (La Fortaleza), a UNESCO site continuously used as an executive residence since the 16th century.
Old San Juan is best for history lovers, photographers, and anyone who enjoys vibrant nightlife in a historic setting. The neighborhood is the birthplace of the piña colada — first mixed at the Caribe Hilton in 1954 — and the bars along Calle San Sebastián and the legendary La Factoría keep the cocktail tradition alive. The colonial cemetery of Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis offers dramatic seaside views, and the nearby La Perla neighborhood adds a dose of colorful local character.
Old San Juan is compact and entirely walkable, though the hills can be steep. Free trolleys circulate through the streets, and the cruise port sits at the neighborhood’s southern edge, making it the first impression for thousands of visitors arriving by sea each week.
