Old Town Riga (Vecrīga) is the medieval heart of Latvia’s capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where cobblestone streets, Gothic spires, and Art Nouveau facades create one of the most architecturally rich neighborhoods in Northern Europe. Founded in 1201, Riga’s Old Town served as a key Hanseatic trading port, and its centuries of German, Swedish, and Russian influence have left behind a remarkably layered cityscape.

The House of Blackheads, rebuilt to its 14th-century Gothic glory on the main square, is the neighborhood’s most photographed landmark. Nearby, Riga Cathedral (Rīgas Doms) houses a magnificent organ with over 6,700 pipes, and St. Peter’s Church tower offers panoramic views from its 72-meter-high observation deck. The Three Brothers — the oldest stone residential buildings in the city, dating from the 15th to 17th centuries — stand side by side on Mazā Pils Street. Rozena Street, barely wider than outstretched arms, claims the title of Riga’s narrowest lane.

Old Town Riga is best for history buffs, architecture photographers, and travelers who enjoy atmospheric walking cities. The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia offers a powerful account of the Soviet and Nazi occupations, while the medieval Swedish Gate — the last surviving entrance to the old city — evokes the days when fortified walls encircled the entire quarter. Traditional Latvian restaurants serve rasols (potato salad), karbanāde (breaded pork), and dark rye bread alongside local beers.

The Old Town is compact and pedestrian-friendly. Riga Central Station and the international bus terminal are both a short walk from the medieval walls, and the Christmas market that fills the main square each winter is one of Europe’s most enchanting.
