Gugong National Palace Museum in Taipei

Xinyi District is Taipei’s most modern neighborhood, anchored by the iconic Taipei 101 skyscraper and a dense grid of flagship malls, international restaurants, and entertainment venues. The area stretches from City Hall MRT Station westward to Taipei 101/World Trade Center Station, with Songshou Road and Xinyi Road serving as its commercial spine. Once a military base and industrial zone, Xinyi was master-planned in the 1980s and has since become the financial and lifestyle center of the city.

What is Xinyi District known for?

Xinyi is known primarily for Taipei 101, which at 508 meters held the title of world’s tallest building from 2004 to 2010 and remains Taiwan’s most recognized landmark, alongside a cluster of upscale shopping malls including Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Xinyi Place, ATT 4 FUN, and Breeze Nanshan that together form one of Asia’s densest retail corridors. The district also houses the Taipei World Trade Center, making it the city’s principal venue for international trade fairs and conventions.

Best things to do in Xinyi

  • Ride the high-speed elevator to Taipei 101’s indoor observatory on the 89th floor for panoramic city views.
  • Visit the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, a repurposed 1937 tobacco factory complex hosting design exhibitions and pop-up markets.
  • Explore the Eslite Spectrum Songyan store at Songshan for 24-hour browsing of books, design goods, and local artisan products.
  • Watch the nightly light display on Taipei 101’s LED facade from the pedestrian plaza below.
  • Browse the weekend pop-up vendors and food stalls outside ATT 4 FUN along Songshou Road.

Where to eat in Xinyi

Xinyi offers dining across every price point, from Japanese ramen and Taiwanese beef noodle soup in the basement food halls of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi to Michelin-recognized restaurants on the upper floors of Taipei 101’s mall podium. Din Tai Fung, the globally acclaimed Taiwanese chain famous for xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), operates a flagship location inside the Taipei 101 shopping mall on the fourth floor. The Xinyi branch of Addiction Aquatic Development, located near the Neihu border, supplies premium sushi and seafood to locals, while the Raohe Street Night Market—accessible by a short MRT ride—offers grilled corn, pepper pork buns, and oyster vermicelli in a more traditional street-food atmosphere.

Where to walk in Xinyi

The most rewarding walking route in Xinyi runs along the pedestrian-friendly Xinyi Road Section 5, passing the Taipei City Hall plaza—a large open square used for public concerts and New Year’s Eve countdowns—before continuing past the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi complex and ending at the Taipei 101 base plaza, covering roughly 1.5 kilometers of largely shaded, wide sidewalks. The elevated Sky Bridge connecting several Xinyi malls also allows pedestrians to move between Breeze Nanshan, Taipei 101, and the World Trade Center complex without descending to street level.

How to get to Xinyi District

Xinyi is directly served by two MRT Blue Line (Bannan Line) stations: Taipei City Hall Station (exit 2 or 3 for the mall cluster) and Taipei 101/World Trade Center Station (exit 4 for the tower entrance). Multiple bus routes including the 1, 22, 37, and 204 stop along Zhongxiao East Road and Xinyi Road. Taipei Main Station is four MRT stops west, making the district accessible from any point in the city within 20 minutes.

Best time to visit Xinyi

Xinyi is most spectacular on New Year’s Eve, when Taipei 101 hosts one of Asia’s largest fireworks displays drawing crowds of hundreds of thousands to the surrounding streets and Taipei City Hall plaza, but weekday evenings between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. offer the best balance of atmosphere and manageable crowds for dining and shopping. The district’s malls provide air-conditioned relief during Taipei’s hot and humid July–September typhoon season, making Xinyi a practical base in any weather.
