The neighborhood guide

Ximending Taipei

Taipei’s neon-lit pedestrian district, the ‘Harajuku of Taipei’ — street food, bubble tea, arcades, and the 1908 Red House, anchored by the city’s LGBTQ+ scene.

Gugong National Palace Museum in Taipei

Ximending is Taipei’s most vibrant pedestrian district, often called the “Harajuku of Taipei” for its youthful energy, neon-lit streets, and trend-driven culture. Established as Taiwan’s first pedestrian shopping zone, the neighborhood draws over three million visitors a month with its dense concentration of boutiques, street-food stalls, theaters, and arcade halls spread across a compact grid of car-free lanes just west of Taipei Main Station.

The Red House, built in 1908 during the Japanese colonial era as Taiwan’s first public market, anchors the district’s cultural identity. Today it functions as a creative hub with galleries, indie craft shops, and a weekend market in its surrounding plaza — a space that also celebrates Taipei’s LGBTQ+ community, marked by the Rainbow Six Crossing unveiled after Taiwan became the first Asian nation to legalize same-sex marriage. Nearby, the Tianhou Temple dedicated to Mazu, goddess of the sea, offers a moment of incense-scented calm between shopping runs.

Ximending is best for pop-culture enthusiasts, street-food lovers, and nightlife seekers. Bubble tea is practically a religion here — Xing Fu Tang lets you watch fresh tapioca being hand-rolled in the window. Claw-machine arcades line every block, some 20 cinemas keep the area buzzing, and karaoke bars invite visitors to belt out Mandopop hits late into the night. After dark, the neon signs switch on and the sidewalks fill with street performers and weekend crowds.

Ximending is directly connected to Taipei Main Station via the MRT Bannan (Blue) Line at Ximen Station, making it one of the most accessible neighborhoods in the city. The best time to visit is early evening, when the district transforms into a sensory feast of lights, music, and sizzling street food.
