Cochem, on the Moselle River in Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate, is a picturesque wine town of about 5,300 people and the smallest district seat in the country. Its skyline is dominated by the Reichsburg, a hilltop castle first documented in 1130 and elevated to imperial status in 1151; destroyed by the troops of Louis XIV in 1689, it was rebuilt in romantic neo-Gothic style after 1868.
