Overview

Know before you go

About

Messina, Sicily, is a major port and gateway city in the island’s northeast, set on the Strait of Messina across the water from mainland Calabria, with around 217,000 residents. Founded by the ancient Greeks in the 8th century BC as the colony of Zancle, it has long been Sicily’s main link to the Italian mainland. Its cathedral bell tower houses one of the largest astronomical clocks in the world, built by the Ungerer Company of Strasbourg in 1933, whose gilded figures animate at noon each day. The city was almost entirely destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami on December 28, 1908, and much of its present form dates to the rebuilding that followed. Visitors find the elegant Fountain of Orion, a lively waterfront, and easy connections to the Aeolian Islands and the rest of Sicily.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Messina is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is mild and ideal for sightseeing. Summer can be hot and crowded, while winter is cooler but offers a quieter experience.

Logistics

Getting there and around

Getting there

Messina is accessible via Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA), 1 hour 15 minutes by car or 2 hours by bus. Ferry connections include Villa San Giovanni (20 minutes), Reggio Calabria (35 minutes with up to 18 daily crossings), and Salerno (9 hours daily). Train service provides direct connections from Rome (8-9 hours) and Naples (6-7 hours). Car access from mainland Italy requires a 24/7 ferry from Villa San Giovanni. The port offers both guarded and unguarded parking, with free parking available near Piazza Antonello.

Getting around

Getting around Messina is relatively straightforward, especially for travelers who appreciate a mix of scenic strolls and efficient transport. The city’s main sights—like the Duomo, the Astronomical Clock, and the waterfront—are clustered around the historic center, making it highly walkable and ideal for leisurely exploration. For longer distances, ATM (Azienda Trasporti di Messina) operates local buses and a single-line tram system that runs along the coast between Gazzi and Annunziata; tickets are inexpensive and can be purchased at kiosks or tabacchi shops, with daily passes offering great value if you plan to make multiple trips. Taxis are available but can be pricey, and rideshare options like Uber aren’t widely used—consider arranging rides through your accommodation or using local apps such as ItTaxi for reliability.

Messina, located on the northeastern tip of Sicily, is a city with a rich history and stunning coastal views. Known for its beautiful architecture, including the iconic Messina Cathedral and the astronomical clock, the city offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and modern charm. The nearby Strait of Messina provides breathtaking scenery and opportunities for exploration.

Context

Culture, customs and safety

Cultural heritage

Messina represents the cultural crossroads of Sicily and the Mediterranean, where ancient Greek colonization, Norman conquest, and maritime trade traditions created a strategic Sicilian cultural gateway between Europe and North Africa. The city preserves traditional Sicilian crafts and customs while maintaining its role as cultural bridge between mainland Italy and island Sicily, despite historical earthquakes that required cultural rebuilding. Messina cultural heritage encompasses ancient Greek Sicilian culture, Norman architectural influence, traditional Sicilian maritime customs, and contemporary Italian regional identity that continues to represent Sicilian cultural resilience and Mediterranean cultural exchange.

Local customs & etiquette

Messina locals embrace traditional Sicilian hospitality with warm greetings and extended meal times. The midday spectacle of the Cathedral’s astronomical clock at noon draws locals and visitors alike to Piazza del Duomo. Sicilian dining customs include aperitivo culture, late dinners (9-10 PM), and sharing antipasti. Coffee is consumed standing at bars, never with milk after 11 AM. Religious festivals and processions are important community events. Locals appreciate visitors learning basic Italian phrases and showing respect for earthquake memorial sites. Ferry schedules dominate daily life, and locals often orient directions by the Strait of Messina.
