About
San Quirico d’Orcia is a small medieval hill town in Tuscany’s Province of Siena, set amid the rolling, cypress-dotted farmland of the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia about 35 km southeast of Siena. Home to roughly 2,500 residents, it has Etruscan origins and grew into an important stop on the Via Francigena, the medieval pilgrimage route from northern Europe to Rome. The town’s centerpiece is the Collegiata dei Santi Quirico e Giulitta, a Romanesque church whose richly carved main portal dates to 1080. Just inside the walls lie the Horti Leonini, geometric Italian Renaissance gardens laid out around 1540 by Diomede Leoni. Beyond the gates, the postcard landscapes of the Val d’Orcia—lone cypresses, golden wheat fields, and distant farmhouses—make this one of Tuscany’s most photographed corners. Quiet, walkable, and steeped in history, San Quirico d’Orcia is an ideal base for exploring nearby Pienza, Montalcino, and the region’s celebrated wines and hot springs.

The walled centro storico clusters around the Collegiata Romanesque church and the Horti Leonini, a 16th-century Italian garden. Via Dante Alighieri is the main street with shops and cafes. Outside the walls, the surrounding Val d’Orcia landscape of rolling hills, lone cypresses, and golden fields is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The hamlet of Bagno Vignoni, 5 km south, is built around a hot-spring basin.
Best time to visit
The best time to visit San Quirico D’Orcia is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is mild and the countryside is particularly beautiful. Summer can be hot, but it is also a time for local festivals and cultural events. Winter offers a quieter experience with fewer tourists.

Getting there
From Siena, drive 43 km south on the SR 2 (Via Cassia). From Florence, the drive is about 110 km south (1 h 40 min). The nearest train station is on a minor Siena-Buonconvento-Monte Amiata branch line with limited service. Most visitors arrive by car. TIEMME buses from Siena to San Quirico operate several times daily.
Getting around
San Quirico d’Orcia is a tiny walled town—10 minutes walk end to end. Cars should be parked outside the eastern gate. For the surrounding Val d’Orcia villages (Pienza, Montalcino, Bagno Vignoni), a car or bicycle is essential. TIEMME buses connect to Siena (1.5 hours) and Pienza (10 min) but run infrequently. Guided e-bike tours of the Val d’Orcia are available.

Inside, a polyptych by Sano di Pietro (15th century) and a wooden choir illustrate local Sienese artistic traditions. The church served pilgrims on the Via Francigena and retains its modest medieval proportions.
Val d'Orcia Cypress-Lined Roads
The most photographed landscape in Tuscany: rolling clay hills striped with cypress trees, golden wheat, and green vineyards that shift colours through the seasons. The Cypress Road (Strada dei Cipressi) near San Quirico and the Cipressi di San Quirico (a cluster of cypresses on a knoll alongside the SR 2) are among the most iconic viewpoints. Dawn and sunset offer the best light for photography.
Bagno Vignoni Hot Springs
A village 5 km south of San Quirico built around a 16th-century stone basin fed by thermal springs at 49 degrees C. The basin replaces the traditional piazza; bathing in it is no longer permitted, but the atmospheric setting is worth visiting. Below the village, the Parco dei Mulini has a free natural hot waterfall and a warm stream among medieval mill ruins, offering a wild bathing experience.
Montalcino & Brunello Wine
The hilltop town of Montalcino, 20 km west, produces Brunello di Montalcino—one of Italy’s most celebrated and expensive red wines, made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes and aged a minimum of 5 years. The 14th-century Fortezza houses a public enoteca for tasting. Surrounding estates like Biondi-Santi, Banfi, and Col d’Orcia offer vineyard tours.
