Overview

About

Luxembourg City, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is a dramatically sited fortress city perched on rocky cliffs above the deep gorges of the Alzette and Petrusse rivers. Founded in 963 when Count Siegfried built a castle on the Bock promontory, it grew into one of Europe’s mightiest strongholds, earning the nickname “Gibraltar of the North.” Its old quarters and fortifications were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994, and its most celebrated sight is the Bock Casemates, a labyrinth of defensive tunnels carved into the cliffs beginning in the 17th century. Travelers wander the elegant Ville-Haute upper town with its Grand Ducal Palace and Gothic Notre-Dame Cathedral, then descend to the picturesque riverside districts of Grund, Clausen, and Pfaffenthal. A cosmopolitan seat of European Union institutions, the multilingual city pairs centuries of military history with a thriving modern banking and cultural scene.

Best time to visit
