Zermatt is known for its wonderful long ski lines with terrain to suit all ability levels, but it also offers outdoor sports in other seasons. From the Winkelmatten to the Furi, there is a mountain track for bicycles, and the Zermatt Alpin Center offers skilled climbing guides all year.

The Valais region’s climbing and winter sports headquarters are also one of Switzerland’s major international resorts, nestled in a green valley surrounded by rugged mountainsides.

The Mighty Matterhorn, a massive and gently curving peak that dominates Zermatt from almost every angle, is one of the world’s most photographed mountains because it is hauntingly beautiful.

Zermatt is not accessible by car. By car, the closest point is a huge parking lot about five kilometers from the hamlet, to which electric vehicle shuttles run.

Passengers arriving by train from Brig are dropped off in the hamlet, where a rack railroad, funicular, and cableways whisk them away to an infinite series of panoramic Alpine views and skiing and hiking routes.

Accommodations, great restaurants, and luxury spas abound in Zermatt, but the mountains, alpine lakes, and verdant forest remain the town’s main draw, summer or winter.

With this list of the best tourist attractions in Zermatt, you can plan the perfect itinerary for your vacation. Just a quick tip: if you’re planning on hiking, skiing, or even climbing the Swiss mountain peaks, ensure you’re insured – not just in case of injury, but even for things like delays, cancellations due to weather, or trouble with tickets.

Best Tourist Attractions in Zermatt

1. The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

The Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Address: Schluhmattstrasse 28, 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

Without the Matterhorn’s steep pyramid as a dramatic background, Zermatt Matterhorn would be just another charming little Swiss village rather than a world-famous emblem of the Alps and Switzerland. The mountain Matterhorn Glacier Paradise defines Zermatt and provides a year-round charm that no other ski resort can match, making it the Swiss poster child.

The summit, which stands at 4,478 meters, has four faces, one for each compass point. Sharp ridges split them, and multiple glaciers lie beneath the steep top.

Switzerland has three faces. The south face looks out over Valtournenche, one of Italy’s most popular ski resorts. The Theodul Pass, located east of the Matterhorn’s top, was an important trading route in Roman and medieval times.

At 3883 m above sea level, the Glacier Castle in the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise is the world’s highest glacier palace. This magical area will entice you into the exciting world of perpetual ice. It’s as if you’ve entered a fantastic fairy tale encircled by beautifully made ice sculptures and centuries-old ice structures.

In the huge ice field between the Klein Matterhorn and the Breithorn, the Glacier Palace is not readily evident — it’s 15 meters below the surface. The only route is by lift; the descent is already an awe-inspiring experience.

2. Skiing And Winter Sports

Skiing and Winter Sports

The surrounding Glacier Express enables Zermatt to provide year-round skiing opportunities. It is Switzerland’s highest ski resort. The town’s spectacular scenery and ski terrain range from 2,500 to 3,900 meters, with Switzerland’s biggest vertical drop of more than 2,133 meters.

In the winter, skiing is available on the Breithorn plateau and the 3,500-meter Plateau Rosa near the Theodul Pass, which may be reached via the Kleines Matterhorn cableway.

One of the most memorable ski experiences in the Alps is riding the lifts to the top, skiing over the Theodul Pass, and down into the Italian ski resort of Cervina, located at the base of the pass.

The world’s highest 3S cableway was launched in 2019 and can transport 2,000 skiers in about an hour to the Matterhorn Glacier, which is 3,883 meters above sea level, where you can ski all year.

Other winter sports choices include heli-skiing, high-altitude ski excursions, Nordic trails, and night skiing, but you are not required to ski to enjoy winter sports in this region.

Snowshoeing routes, natural-ice skating rinks, and multiple curling rinks may be found here. Zermatt does not attract large weekend crowds because it is far away from larger towns, and you can access three different ski regions with a single ski lift pass.

3. Gornergrat Railway

Ride the Gornergrat Railway

Address: Bahnhofpl. 1, 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

It takes 10 kilometers to reach the peak of the Gornergrat, the Gornergrat Bahn, Europe’s highest mountain railroad that runs across open terrain, and takes 45 minutes to complete.

Climbing the east side of Nikolai Valley and up the Riffelberg hills in a sweeping loop, the rack railroad provides ever-more-impressive vistas of the Matterhorn. Riffelberg, located at an elevation of 2,582 meters, includes a hotel and restaurant with a terrace that is a favorite skier’s sundeck in the summer.

The Riffelsee, at 2,819 meters above sea level, is just a few minutes’ walk below the Rotenboden station and offers a wonderful view of the Matterhorn’s peak reflected in its water – the vista is at its most spectacular in the morning.

Afterward, the line goes high above the Gorner Glacier to the summit station at 3,089 meters, from where it is only a five-minute ascent to the famed Gornergrat observatory, which is perched on a rocky ridge above and adjacent to the Gorner Glacier.

From this location, you can have fun and enjoy one of the most spectacular views in the Alps. In the center is the Matterhorn, with the Breithorn, the twin peaks of Zwillinge, the Lyskamm, and Monte Rosa to the left.

To the north are the peaks of the Mischabel group, which includes the 4,545-meter Dom – the highest peak entirely within Switzerland – and to the south is a view of the Mischabel group.

From the Gornergrat, it is possible to trek back down to Zermatt. From the Findel Glacier Restaurant, a 45-minute diversion leads up to the Findel Glacier, following which the path descends dramatically for 90 minutes to the Findel Glacier Restaurant. The walk from the restaurant continues through the resort community of Findeln, from where it takes around one hour to reach Zermatt station.

4. Kleines Matterhorn

Kleines Matterhorn

Address: Klein Matterhorn, 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

When you live where the stunning landscape is commonplace, taking the tallest cable car in Europe from the Trockener Steg to the north face of the Kleines Matterhorn is one of the most spectacular adventures you can take.

It is also one of the most challenging. The Kleines Matterhorn, which rises to 3,884 meters above sea level, can be reached via a lift from the higher station.

The Schwarzsee is an alpine lake with a restaurant that can be reached via a cable car departing from Furgg. The Glacier Palace, located 15 meters below the glacier’s surface and between the Klein Matterhorn and the Breithorn, can also be visited.

The Glacier Palace is accessible through a lift 15 meters below the surface into a world of shimmering crystals. Tunnels and hallways featuring ice sculptures and a snack bar have been carved out of the glacier.

5. Sunnegga

Sunnegga

Address: Sunnegga, 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

A funicular ascends via a tunnel from the town of Zermatt to the Sunnegga sun terrace, located at 2,289 meters. In addition to a year-round restaurant, various other attractions are available throughout the summer months.

A marmot-watching station allows visitors to witness these small furry mammals, which live in mountain caves, splashing around in the crystal clear Leisure water. This is also a good starting point for several walks nearby.

In winter, Wolli’s Adventure Park is a non-threatening introduction to skiing for beginners. At the same time, experienced skiers can continue their journey to the Rothorn area’s trails and snowfields via gondolas, chairlifts, and a cable car system. You can also access the Gornergrat ski slopes from this location.

6. Hamlet Structures: Hinterdorf

Hinterdorf

Address: 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

Higher up in the village of Zermatt, further than the Monte Rosa Hotel (the first place to stay built for early trekkers and in which you can take a cultural tour), is a warren of narrow lanes, weathered old wooden chalets, barns, stables, and storehouses.

The Hinterdorf is a maze of narrow lanes, weathered old wooden chalets, barns, stables, and storehouses. These warehouses are equipped with massive round stone slabs on the supporting supports, which serve as a mouse deterrent.

The Hinterdorf’s buildings originate from the 16th to the 18th Centuries and are constructed of the dense larch wood found in the region, with stone slab roofs to withstand the weight of snow.

Zermatt is one of the few places where you can see a large collection of historically significant Valais hamlet structures in such good condition.

7. Toboggan Down the Gornergrat

Toboggan down the Gornergrat

The Gornergrat Railway’s Rotenboden station starts at the tallest toboggan slope in the Alps, which runs 1.5 kilometers down to the Riffelberg. You’ll enjoy one of the mountain’s most beautiful panoramic views throughout the 10-minute trip.

Depending on your skill (and thrill) level, you can rent a variety of toboggans, ranging from traditional double-runner sleds to speedier Ghosky or Snooc versions. The former has two skis with a fixed seat, and the latter has a single ski with an attached seat.

Snowmobiles with seats for youngsters are also available. With a Sledding Ticket, you can ride via Zermatt up to the Rotenboden and make as many sled runs from Rotenboden and Riffelberg as you want, ascending to the top of each run.

8. Stockalper Palace And The UNESCO World Nature Forum

tockalper Palace And The UNESCO World Nature Forum

Address: Alte Simplonstrasse 28, 3900 Brig-Glis, Switzerland

Address: Bahnhofstrasse 9a, 3904 Naters, Switzerland

Even though many visitors to Zermatt pass via Brig, few stop or return for a longer visit; that’s a pity because this town on the upper Rhone is lovely, with two major tourist attractions.

Brig has been the entry to the Simplon Pass since Roman times, and it is home to Switzerland’s finest Baroque mansion, the 17th Century Stockalper Palace.

It is open for tours of its spectacular rooms and an exhibit on the history and significance of the Simplon Pass, which early business magnate Kaspar Stockalper built. This exhibition, as well as the lovely castle gardens, are both free.

The World Nature Forum, located across the river in the Naters area, serves as the base camp for the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch, featuring interactive and multi-sensory Alps installations.

Thanks to films, interactive displays, and relics, visitors are immersed in the magnificence of the mountain peaks, their history, and their future in the face of climate change and fast-melting glaciers. UNESCO World Heritage films are exhibited on a 100-square-meter screen in the Panora.

9. Matterhorn Museum

Matterhorn Museum

Address: Kirchpl., 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

The early climbers are integral to Zermatt’s history as a resort, and you’ll learn all about them at this well-designed contemporary Matterhorn museum.

You’ll discover dramatic scenes from Der Berg Ruft (The Mountain Calls), shot in Zermatt between 1937 and 1938, as well as artifacts, images, and a Matterhorn relief depicting the various ways to the peak.

But there’s a lot more to this place than just climbing. You’ll discover furnishings and Home interiors that depict mountain life and Neolithic Age relics.

The lovely 1906 Marmot Fountain, located outside the museum, is one of Zermatt’s most famous attractions. A family of bronze marmots frolics among the cascades, polished to a high gleam by the parts of a century’s worth of onlookers. A stunning life-size bronze ibex stands behind the fountain.

10. Theodul Glacier And Pass

Theodul Glacier And Pass

From Zermatt to Winkelmatten, cable cars travel via Furi to the Schwarzsee, then via Furi and Furgg to the Trockener Steg at the Upper Theodul Glacier, at 2,939 meters.

A ski lift runs from the Trockener Steg to the Furgg saddle at 3,365 meters on the Italian border, and it is also available in the summer. A second ski lift in Zermatt gondola stations connects Gandegg and the Theodul Pass.

A five-hour glacier tour with a guide is available. It includes trekking to the Hermettji and crossing the crevassed Upper Theodul Glacier with a rope to the pass 2.25 hours later. The Theodul Pass was already used to route into Italy in the fourth century.

A cable car travels down from Testa Grigia, at the top, to Cervina, a tourist town on the Italian side. In the winter, skiers cross the border to ski both areas on the same day.

1. Book A Boutique Hotel With A View Of The Matterhorn

Book A Boutique Hotel With A View Of The Matterhorn

Address: Oberdorfstrasse 134, 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

The favorite hotel of many people worldwide is Hotel Coeurs Des Alpes. The location, decor, spa, and, most importantly, Leni and Thomas’s hosts are all inspiring.

When you reach, you will be given a drink. You can drink Prosecco and sit outside to enjoy the Matterhorn views. Your baggage will be taken upstairs, and you will be led to your room when ready.

The hotel and rooms are tastefully decorated with Heinz Julen’s stylish furniture. You can stay there at any time. One is the cheapest double room, the is a two-story loft, the is the Gallery Suite, and the is with family in the Sky Suite. Your hopes are exceeded in every room.

We recommend staying in a loft if you’re traveling with another person. It has the best design, with two stories, a soaking tub, a fireplace, and a huge terrace with views of the Matterhorn. The Sky Suite is ideal if you’re traveling with a party of 5-6 people. It consists of three bedrooms and has a bathroom.

The outside terrace at Hotel Coeurs Des Alpes has recently expanded, providing even more opportunities to relax and enjoy the view of the Matterhorn. Soaking in the outdoor hot tub as the sun sets behind the Matterhorn is one of the people’s favorite pastimes.

The beautiful hotel also offers a luxury spa featuring a hammam, sauna, infrared sauna, and plunge pool. The accommodation fee includes a Swiss breakfast (frühstück) buffet. You can even have a mimosa with their Prosecco and freshly squeezed orange juice!

You may hike great loops of trails from Zermatt’s center that stop at two beautiful places. Remember to print out this map and bring your hiking shoes! It’s free since there are no elevators involved.

Go to the Hotel Omnia in Zermatt and trek upwards via hiking trails. You’ll weave your way past buildings until you reach the forest. Your first visit should be at Edelweiss Zermatt, a restaurant and hotel built atop a cliff with stunning views of Zermatt and the valley.

With so many hiking trails, take the one of the southwest towards Z’mutt from there. Beautiful views of the Matterhorn appear as you reach the top of the cliff.

Find Restaurant Z’mutt in the small village of roughly 20 buildings and treat yourself to dinner when visiting Zermatt. The cheese spaetzle was delectable, and the beer was refreshing.

3. Pamper Yourself At The Spa

Pamper Yourself At The Spa

4. Hike The Five-Lakes Trail

Hike The Five-Lakes Trail

Address: Stellisee, 3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

If you want to go out in the Swiss highlands, the 5-Seenweg (5 Lakes Walk) is a must-do. The 2.5-hour climb passes five picturesque lakes and provides breathtaking views of the harsh, rocky terrain via hiking trails.

The moderately strenuous 9.8-kilometer hike is primarily downhill. The trail begins at Blauherd Station, and Sunnegga Station concludes the mountain lakes.

After seeing the sunrise over the Matterhorn, you can have breakfast at Restaurant Fluhalp, just a short walk from the lake. Then, you have the rest of the day free to trek the renowned 5 Lake Trail.

The five lakes are Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grünsee, Moosjisee, and Leisee. This journey is primarily downhill and is a lovely and easy walk. Each lake is distinct, providing varied views of the majestic Matterhorn and the surrounding mountain peaks.

Grindjisee

Another lovely reflection from Grindjisee Lake. The Matterhorn is beautifully reflected in Lake Grindjisee, while Zermatt hiking is the best in Europe’s highest mountains.

Grünsee

Lake Grünsee is even more beautiful. With a sandy beach and a sandy bottom, Lake Grünsee is a popular swimming spot.

Moosjisee

The Moosjisee Storage Reservoir is a great spot for a picnic while visiting Zermatt. The milky blue waters contrast beautifully with the greenery and snowy peaks of the highlands.

Riffelalp

Even the train and highest cable car station have breathtaking vistas. Most people go on to Leisure for the 5 Lake Trail and end their day there. Gornergrat is one of the world’s most breathtaking sights hiking in Zermatt.

5. Indulge In Mouthwatering Swiss Cuisine

Raclette

Raclette

Local alpine mixes such as cheese, dried meats, garden vegetables, and wines are prominent in Swiss cuisine. Raclette is an individual’s favorite.

The meal is made by cooking a half-wheel cheese over a large heating element and scraping off the crisped and bubbling top layer.

It’s served plain, with baby potatoes, cornichons, and pickled onions on the side. YUM!!! Look for “Raclette a discression” (all-you-can-eat) and eat plate after plate to your heart’s content.

Fondue

Fondue

Cheese and fondue Chinoise are the next favorite dishes (meat fondue with broth). Remember that pricing is frequently posted per serving with a two-serving minimum, so it may be pricier than it appears. You can get the broth as a soup once you finish the fondue Chinoise. For those who want a savory dessert, this is ideal!

Visit Restaurants Through Mountainside Hamlets Around Zermatt

In the valleys and mountainsides surrounding Zermatt, there are numerous hamlets to discover. These little settlements usually feature 10-20 traditional wooden alpine cottages and a couple of seasonal restaurants.

We discovered a short journey that takes you through the charming hamlets of Furi, Z’mutt, Zum See, and Blatten. Prepare for a mountain restaurant crawl by taking time at each. Enjoy soaking up the fresh air and sun on the outside terraces with a nice meal and a drink in hand.

7. Discover Zermatt’s Culinary Scene

Discover Zermatt's Culinary Scene

Zermatt is a gourmet hotspot with six Michelin-starred restaurants and 20 Gault & Millau-awarded establishments. From Italian to Japanese, the alpine town provides diverse foods.

These are these favorite Zermatt eateries, each for a different reason

  • Manud is the best cafe. A hip cafe that serves coffee, kombucha, local wines, and delectable nibbles. Lunch should include a Manud Hot Dog, and dinner should have a guest chef. Roberto Catra, a Kaiseki chef, served last winter of 2022.
  • Chez Vrony has the best view and atmosphere. This is the ideal lunch place on the mountainside with a view of the Matterhorn.
  • After Seven is the best place to go for fine meals. The stunningly constructed restaurant has been awarded a Michelin star and will take you on a culinary journey.
  • Brassiere Uno is the best place for inventive cuisine in a relaxed setting. The stylish restaurant, new to the scene, provides a rotating five-course pre-fixe menu focusing on high-quality, organic products.
  • Schäferstube is the best for meat fondue. The restaurant is noted for delivering high-quality Swiss meals with local products in a rustic and woodsy setting. They are one of the few restaurants that will serve a single portion of meat fondue instead of a two-person requirement.
  • Why Whymper Stube is the best for cheese fondue: Swiss comfort food is served in a traditional wooden Swiss chalet.
  • Schäferstube is the best for raclette. Some of the tastiest raclettes can be found at this tiny eatery.
  • Sonnmatten is the best for wiener schnitzel. During lunchtime, the tiny restaurant serves excellent veal schnitzel. It’s fantastic! Pinte is also a fantastic place to have a schnitzel for dinner.

We strongly advise making dinner reservations at least one week in advance, as these restaurants are trendy.

Discover The Cog Railway Up To Gornergrat At 3,100m Elevation

Address: Gornergrat3920 Zermatt, Switzerland

Gornergrat, at 3,100 meters above sea level, provides a breathtaking panorama. The Matterhorn sits perfectly in your view from the summit, surrounded by snow-capped peaks.

If you’re not a hiker, you’ll be relieved to learn that no hiking paths are involved here; instead, you’ll enjoy a gorgeous trip to the top. When you arrive, relax on the restaurant patio with a hot coffee or drink.

The Gornergrat Bahn takes roughly 30 minutes to get from Zermatt. The tickets are a little pricy, but they’re well worth it if you’re not planning trekking in Zermatt.

If it’s a clear day, we recommend going up to Gornergrat. Early in the morning, before the clouds rise from the valleys, is the best time to see bright skies in the mountains.

GetYourGuide makes it simple to buy tickets for the Gornergrat cog train. We like that you can cancel up to 24 hours before and get a full refund.

9. Play Tennis On The Beautiful Zermatt Courts

Play Tennis On The Beautiful Zermatt Courts

One of the best-hidden secrets in Zermatt is the public tennis court. Court rents are 22 CHF per hour, and racket rentals for the day are 5 CHF each. We found the courts mostly vacant and paid for an extra hour since we had so much fun. Courts and rentals can be arranged at the Sports pavilion.

Quaff Swiss Wines

Switzerland has over 200 grape varieties, which means a thriving wine industry. Valais wines such as the Heida, which goes nicely with raclette and cheese fondue, and the Cornalin, which goes well with cured meats, are favorites.

We recommend visiting Elsie’s Wine & Champagne Bar, a quiet local hangout, and L’Atelier Grandsire, a patisserie and wine boutique where you can sample Swiss wines.

11. Go On A Panoramic Alpine Hike To Riffelsee Lake

Alpine Hike To Riffelsee Lake

Starting at an elevation of 2,815 meters, this panoramic climb has the most wilderness sense of all the hikes on our list.

As you descend past Riffelsee Lake and over a ridge, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks and the town of Zermatt below. Witnessing the unique reflection of the Matterhorn in Riffelsee Lake is the trip’s highlight.

Your journey ends in Riffelalp, a hamlet best known for the former Riffelalp Grand Hotel, which hosted celebrities and members of high society. The opulent hotel was built in 1884 but tragically destroyed by fire in 1964. In today’s world, it is known as Riffelalp Resort 2222 m, and it is a luxury ski resort.

Take the cog railway to the Rotenboden railway station, where the trailhead is located. Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll descend for around 15 minutes until you reach the beautiful Riffelsee Lake. The hike descends to Riffelalp from Riselsee Lake, where it begins. Taking the cog railway back down to Zermatt from the Riffelalp railway station is popular.

The 5.9-kilometer hike is classed as moderate difficulty, with a total elevation gain of 607 meters and a fall of 607 meters. Please refer to the trail map instead because Google Maps does not contain the entire trail.

The Valais-branded red and white helicopters of Air Zermatt are nestled into the hotel welcome book, and it is a legit experience after seeing them in person. Helicopter tours provide an excellent opportunity to see the mountains closely and personally.

It may be your first time in one of these unusual flying aircraft, and the sensation of taking off is thrilling.
