Leopoldstadt is Vienna’s 2nd district, an island neighborhood wedged between the Danube Canal and the Danube River just across the water from the historic Innere Stadt. Deeply intertwined with the city’s Jewish heritage, it is home to a thriving Orthodox community of more than 10,000 members, with kosher restaurants, bakeries, and religious schools woven into the fabric of everyday life.

The district’s star attraction is the Wiener Prater, an enormous public park anchored by the Wurstelprater amusement area and its iconic Giant Ferris Wheel (Riesenrad), spinning since 1897. For quieter green space, the Augarten is Vienna’s oldest Baroque park — 52 hectares of tree-lined avenues surrounding the renowned Augarten Porcelain Manufactory, one of Europe’s oldest, and the rehearsal home of the Vienna Boys’ Choir.

Leopoldstadt is best for culture seekers, foodies, and travelers who want to experience a less touristy side of Vienna. The Karmelitermarkt, a market operating since 1671 with over 80 vendors, comes alive on Saturday mornings with local farmers selling cheese, honey, and wine. Balkan grill restaurants cluster around Vorgartenstraße, and the rapidly transforming Nordbahnviertel brings sleek new cafés alongside community gardens and street art.

The district is well connected by the U1 and U2 metro lines and multiple tram routes. From the Schwedenplatz bridge, the Innere Stadt is a five-minute walk, making Leopoldstadt an excellent base that blends local authenticity with easy access to the imperial center.
