Neubau is Vienna’s 7th district and widely regarded as the city’s hippest neighborhood. Wedged between the Ringstrasse and the Gürtel, this creative quarter is where independent boutiques, specialty coffee roasters, vintage shops, and street-art murals thrive alongside centuries-old Biedermeier architecture in the narrow lanes of Spittelberg.

The MuseumsQuartier (MQ) dominates the district’s eastern edge — one of the world’s ten largest cultural complexes, housing the Leopold Museum with its unrivaled Egon Schiele collection, the mumok museum of modern art, and sun-drenched courtyards that serve as Vienna’s favorite outdoor living rooms. Nearby, the Volkstheater has staged Austrian and international drama since 1889 in one of the largest German-language theaters in the world.

Neubau is best for design lovers, foodies, and anyone who wants to experience Vienna beyond the imperial palaces. Westbahnstraße draws photographers and camera collectors, while parallel streets like Kirchengasse and Lindengasse are lined with artisan workshops and concept stores. The Spittelberg Christmas Market, set among restored Baroque houses each December, is one of the city’s most charming.

Coffee culture runs deep here — spots like Café Comet offer up to ten single-origin pour-overs on any given day. After dark, the district’s bar scene ranges from craft cocktail lounges to laid-back neighborhood pubs. Neubau is served by the U3 metro line and multiple tram routes, placing it within easy reach of the city center and Westbahnhof train station.
