Mal Strana Prague

Prague’s Baroque Lesser Town below the Castle — orange-roofed palaces, the domed St. Nicholas Church, hidden gardens, and the John Lennon Wall just off Charles Bridge.

a closer look at the Prague Astronomical Clock

Malá Strana (Lesser Town) is Prague’s most romantic neighborhood, a Baroque jewel established in 1257 on the west bank of the Vltava River directly below Prague Castle. Its orange-roofed palaces, hidden gardens, and quiet cobblestone lanes make it the perfect counterpoint to the bustling Old Town across the Charles Bridge — a place where the pace slows and the city’s beauty deepens around every corner.

St. Nicholas Church, with its iconic green dome and bell tower, dominates the main square (Malostranské náměstí) and is considered one of the finest Baroque churches in Central Europe — both Mozart and Bach performed here. The Wallenstein Garden, a serene courtyard with Renaissance statues, fountains, and free-roaming peacocks, adjoins the Czech Senate building. Down by the Vltava, Kampa Island — sometimes called “Prague’s Venice” — offers riverside parks, the Kampa Museum of modern art, and David Černý’s famous Crawling Babies sculptures.

Malá Strana is best for romantics, art lovers, and travelers who prefer atmosphere over crowds. The John Lennon Wall, a symbol of peaceful dissent during the Communist era, draws visitors and aspiring graffiti artists to a quiet lane near the French Embassy. Mostecká Street connects Charles Bridge to the main square and is lined with boutiques, galleries, and traditional Czech restaurants serving goulash, svíčková, and golden Czech lager.

The neighborhood is compact and entirely walkable. The Malostranská metro station (Line A) provides quick connections to the rest of Prague, and the climb from Malá Strana up to Prague Castle through the terraced Baroque gardens of Vrtbovská zahrada is one of the city’s most rewarding walks.
