Oberwesel, on the left bank of the Middle Rhine in Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate, is a small wine town of fewer than 3,000 people within the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley. A free imperial city from 1237 to 1309, it is celebrated for having the oldest, largest and best-preserved town fortifications on the Middle Rhine, a ring of medieval walls studded with sixteen towers. Two churches dominate its skyline: the red sandstone Liebfrauenkirche, known as the red church, and the hilltop St. Martin’s, the white church. Above the town broods Schonburg castle, now partly a hotel. Surrounded by Riesling vineyards and walkable ramparts, Oberwesel is one of the most atmospheric stops along Germany’s romantic stretch of the Rhine.

Getting around
Oberwesel is small and walkable in 15 minutes. Regional trains (Mittelrheinbahn RB 26) connect Oberwesel to Koblenz (35 min) and Mainz (50 min) along the left bank of the Rhine.
