Sankt Goar is a small riverside town on the left bank of the Middle Rhine in Germany’s Rhineland-Palatinate, beautifully set within the Upper Middle Rhine Valley—a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002, often called the Rhine Gorge. With about 2,900 residents at an elevation near 74 m, the town is dominated by Burg Rheinfels, begun in 1245 by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen and once the mightiest fortress on the river; though largely destroyed by French forces in 1797, its sprawling ruins remain the largest on the Middle Rhine. Just upstream looms the legendary Lorelei rock, rising across the water by Sankt Goarshausen, where folklore tells of a siren luring boatmen onto the rapids. Visitors come to tour the castle, walk the riverfront promenade, sample Rhine Valley Riesling, and board scenic boat cruises past terraced vineyards and clustered hilltop castles. Sankt Goar lies about 35 km south of Koblenz, making it a classic stop on any Rhine itinerary.

Fly into Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and rent a car or take a train to Oberwesel, then local transport to Sankt Goar. Rhine river cruises stop in town. The B9 road follows the Rhine bank directly through the village.

Katz & Maus Castles
Across the river (in St. Goarshausen) are Burg Katz and Burg Maus. You can’t visit Katz (private), but they provide the perfect backdrop for photos from Sankt Goar. They are textbook medieval castles.
