Trastevere is Rome’s most bohemian neighborhood, a tangle of ivy-draped lanes, ochre-walled houses, and lively piazzas on the west bank of the Tiber. The name — from the Latin trans Tiberium, “across the Tiber” — hints at its historical identity as a quarter apart, and that independent spirit endures today in a neighborhood where proud Trasteverini still consider themselves the city’s true Romans.

The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of Rome’s oldest churches with shimmering 12th-century mosaics, anchors the neighborhood’s main piazza. From there, lanes radiate past artisan leather workshops, vintage bookshops, and the daily San Cosimato market with its fruit, vegetable, and fish stalls. Climb the Janiculum Hill behind the neighborhood for one of the best panoramic views in all of Rome — a sweeping vista that takes in the dome of St. Peter’s, the Colosseum, and the Roman skyline.

Trastevere is best for foodies, nightlife seekers, and travelers who prefer neighborhood atmosphere over monument-ticking. The dining scene ranges from beloved Roman trattorias serving cacio e pepe and supplì to trendy wine bars and craft cocktail spots. Bar San Calisto in Piazza di San Calisto is a neighborhood institution — cheap drinks, card-playing locals, and an authenticity that most of Rome has lost. After dinner, the lanes fill with buskers, street artists, and crowds spilling from restaurant terraces.

Trastevere has no metro station, which is part of its charm. Trams (line 8) and buses connect it to the rest of Rome, but most visitors simply walk across the Tiber from the Campo de’ Fiori area or the Jewish Ghetto. The further you wander from the river, the quieter — and more rewarding — it gets.
