Aside from its abundant beauty, Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron is also rich in history.

Leopold Anton Freiherr von Firmian, a former prince-archbishop of Salzburg, is credited with creating this spectacular castle in which the hotel now resides.

Completed in 1736, the palace was designed as an exclusive dwelling for his family, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountain range and rolling greens as a backdrop.

The palace quickly established itself as a preferred high-profile gathering place, and ownership would change hands through the centuries.

Owners include Bavarian King Ludwig I and the prominent banker Carl Spängler, who with the backbreaking work of two waiters managed to turn the old castle into a hotel in the late nineteenth century.

In 1918, the celebrated theater producer Max Reinhardt purchased the castle.

The castle has been painstakingly repaired and preserved over the last 20 years with special effort devoted to the interior of the castle, decorated in a grand rococo style that is beautifully preserved.

If you’ve seen the Sound of Music, you’ll probably be familiar with the sight of Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron, which served as the primary filming location for this classic film in 1965.

Following the castle’s appearance in the film, the number of tourists skyrocketed, leading to the creation of many tours of its grounds, allowing visitors to see where different scenes were shot.
