You may have heard of the “Stairway to Heaven” or the “Haiku Stairs” on Oahu. Stairway to Heaven Hawaii is a hike up a staircase (yes, really) that towers over the island’s Ko’olau Mountains and provides some of the most stunning views you can imagine.

The Stairway to Heaven, previously private property, is something everyone should experience at least once in their life. It’s not for the faint of heart, though – the heaven hike is long and steep, and there are no handrails to help you make your way up.

But if you’re up for the challenge, the views from the top are worth it. On a clear day, you can see the island’s North Shore and the amazing sunsets.

About the Stairway to Heaven

Hiking Haiku Stairs

When most people think of Hawaii, they picture sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and palm trees. While these are certainly all things that can be found on the island of Oahu, there is so much more to this beautiful place.

Located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, the Haiku Stairs is a steep and challenging hiking heaven trail leading to a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean.

The tough hike to the top is strenuous and takes about two hours, but the views are well worth it. The trailhead is located in the Haiku Stairs Park, and the Heaven Hawaii hike begins with a steep climb up a set of stairs.

The first part of the heaven hike is relatively easy, but it gets more difficult as you climb higher. There are several rest stops to take a break and catch your breath.

Climbing the Stairway to Heaven

Rails in Haiku Stairs

It’s not the height of this remarkable climb that’s frightening, although it ascends 2100 feet into the clouds. It’s not the grueling nature of the journey, either — even though the 3900 stairsteps of the heaven hike will cause even the strongest calf muscles to ache and burn.

What’s intimidating about climbing the attraction is that it’s completely illegal, and it’s been forbidden since 1987. Some people will tell you that’s also part of what makes climbing the Haiku Stairs a rush.

The main access points in the Haiku Stairs are located on the North Shore of Oahu. Three points are commonly used to access the trail: Waimea Bay, Haena State Park, and Olomana.

Waimea Bay is a beach on the North Shore of Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. It is considered one of the most beautiful and dangerous beaches in the world. A cliff rises sharply from the water.

Haena State Park is a beautiful place on the north shore of Oahu. It’s known for its stunning scenery and hiking trails, including the famous Stairway to Heaven. The park is also home to many rare and endangered plants and animals, making it a popular destination for nature lovers.

The Olomana is a trio of peaks in the Koolau mountain range on the island of Oahu. In Hawaiian, the name Olomana means “divided heaven” and is appropriate given the three steep peaks that make up the formation. The most popular route to the summit is up the stairway-like ridge.

It’s not an easy climb, and it takes several hours to reach the top by foot. The stairs are extremely narrow in many sections—like a ladder—and only a few platforms are scattered along the way for rest.

The sheer drop-off can be a bit terrifying, and visibility is often hindered by morning mist at lower elevations and clouds closer to the top.

But oh, those views! There’s no better way to experience the power and beauty of Oahu than from this vantage point on top of the world, especially if you can get away with it.

History

Stairway to Heaven

The stairway was closed in 1987 when the communications system was discontinued, and it was soon overgrown with plants and dangerously decayed.

However, the stairway was already well-known as a great scenic heaven hike, and the “No Trespassing” signs around the area made it more exciting for thrill-seekers.

In 2002, the City of Honolulu repaired the entire stairway, with plans to turn it into a public heaven trail. Sadly, the plans fell through, and the Stairway to Heaven has remained officially closed — with a guard posted at its base each morning to keep trespassers away.

This was only a small obstacle for daring hikers willing to brave the stairway in the early hours before dawn. Hundreds of people are said to climb the Haiku Stairs hike every week to relish the stunning panoramic views from the top.

The Secret Naval Radio Station

Kaneohe Omega Transmitter, Oahu, Hawaii

During World War II, the United States Navy constructed a radio station at the top of the Stairway to Heaven to communicate with ships at sea and provide early warning of enemy attacks. The station and radio tower were operated by a small team of sailors and were hidden from view to protect them from enemy detection.

The radio station played a critical role in the defense of Hawaii and the Pacific Theater, and its existence was kept a closely guarded secret for many years. The secret station was used to transmit radio signals to submarines.

Today, the remnants of the top-secret facility that housed the radio station can still be seen at the top of the Stairway to Heaven, about 4,000 steps up the haiku stairs hike. This provides a glimpse into the history of this iconic location.
