Fun & Best Things to do in Freising, Germany
Freising Cathedral

Address: Domberg 36, 85354 Freising, Germany
Freising Cathedral is also known as Saint Mary and Corbinian Cathedral. In German, it is called Mariendom. This building is a Roman-style basilica located in Freising, Bavaria, and it serves as the co-cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Munich and Freising.
The cathedral is renowned for being the venue of Pope Benedict XVI’s ordination as a priest. A major reconstruction of this church was carried out in the Baroque period and began in 1619. Then, a total overhaul began in 1621, and the high altar in the cathedral was dedicated in January 1624.
Before the consecration, Prince Bishop Veit Adam von Gepeckh of Freising contracted Hans Rottenhammer to create a large altarpiece painting. However, Rottenhammer was near the closing stages of his career as well as his life. He was also known to be an alcoholic, and the work ended up being delayed.
The altarpiece commission was eventually reassigned to Rubens, who finished the Woman of the Apocalypse painting. It was a prevalent subject in German iconography from the time of the 15th century.
This completed painting was first moved away to a safe place in 1632 when the Swedish troops began advancing. Currently, it is housed in the Alte Pinakothek art museum in Munich. During the 1920s, several frescoes in the church were seriously damaged and painted over. These frescoes were finally restored in 2006.
This place is located at Cathedral Hill, which is just 13 minutes away from Munich airport. You can book ACHAT Hotel Corbin München Airport if your visit goes beyond a day.

Mariensäule

Address: Marienplatz 5, 85354 Freising, Germany
The Mariensäule, known in English to mean Mary’s Column, is a Merian column standing in Freising, Germany. The essence of the column comes from the belief that Mary is the protector of Bavaria. With this in mind, the locals call her “Patrona Bavaria.”
The column was built long ago, in the year 1638. It was to commemorate the Swedish occupation in the course of the Thirty Years’ War.
On top of the column is the gold sculpture of a half-moon carrying the Blessed Virgin Mary. The 11.6-meter statue screams out loud that Mary is the Queen of Heaven.
On each corner of the column’s four corners, the pedestal has a putto statue created by Ferdinand Murmann. Each of these putto statues represents the state’s victory over its adversaries, as each of the putto depicts a beast they’re fighting.
These beasts and the adversaries they represent are in the forms of the lion for war, the cockatrice for pestilence, the dragon for hunger or famine, and the serpent for heresy.
