The Le Marias neighborhood is a great place to stay in Paris because it is somewhat untouched by modernity. You’ll find twisty, narrow roads and Paris’s oldest square – Place des Vosges. The area is an eclectic mix of communities, like “Little Wenzhou” (one of the city’s two Chinatowns) and the Jewish Quarter.

When we visit Paris, we usually stay in the Le Marais neighborhood. It is easy to get around the city by a short metro ride, and there is much to do within walking distance.

It’s home to many Paris attractions, including beautiful parks, incredible museums and galleries, and some of the city’s best restaurants within walking distance.

For example, Marché des Enfants Rouges is a famous food market where you can try some of the best traditional fares in Paris. Over 80 different stalls sell everything from fresh seafood and cheeses to delicious pastries and street snacks from all over the world!

Nearby the Marché des Enfants Rouges is the Place des Vosges, a beautiful park with sprawling lawns, rose gardens, and tranquil ponds. It’s a great place to relax, stroll, and soak in the city’s unique charm with your goodies from the food market.

Le Marais is one of the best neighborhoods in Paris because it has several renowned museums and galleries. Musée de Carnavalet is an essential stop for first-time visitors.

This fascinating museum is dedicated to the history of Paris and its inhabitants, showcasing everything from historic artwork and relics to personal stories from famous Parisians.

Then there’s the Picasso Museum. This iconic museum is home to more than 5,000 works by surrealist artist Pablo Picasso, as well as many other famous modern and contemporary artists.

While Le Marais is within easy walking distance of many of the city’s leading architectural attractions, including the Seine River and the Louvre, there’s enough to keep you occupied in Le Marais. It connects the city’s major metro lines like Line 1, Line 4, and Line 7, as well as RERs A, B, C, and D.

Plus, this area of Paris still offers a playground of gorgeous architecture, peaceful public parks, exciting museums, and epic shopping adventures. Oh yeah, if you’re a fan of shopping, this neighborhood is blessed with a mix of high-end fashion, boutiques, and vintage thrift shops where you can find great deals on clothes, art, and antiques.

Westfield Forum Les Halles is a great place to start for the amateur or seasoned shopaholic. It’s a massive indoor mall with hundreds of shops, ranging from famous fashion brands to local labels.

But if you’re searching for architecture, green spaces, museums, and retail therapy, Rue de Rivoli is one such place that has a lot. On this busy pedestrian street, you’ll find some of the best shopping in Châtelet-Les Halles and more than a few hidden gems when grabbing a bite.

And speaking of grabbing a bite, grab a table at Au Pied du Cochon. This is where you’ll want to go for a truly authentic Parisian dining experience, the kind the locals go in for. Known for its classic French cuisine, this restaurant serves up some of the best traditional French dishes in the city.

The neighborhood also has cultural hotspots, including multiple well-known theaters like the Théâtre du Châtelet. Other cultural points of interest include the Centre Pompidou. Whenever someone asks us about the best area to stay in Paris, we defer to the Opéra neighborhood. This neighborhood is in the heart of the city center, and its proximity to several metro stations makes it a great home base for exploring Paris.

For the ultimate in Parisian luxury, you’ll want to stay at one of the many five-star hotels and unique lodging options in this ritzy neighborhood, where you can enjoy plush rooms, world-class dining, and pampering spa services.

Countless art galleries and museums are perfect for culture vultures in this upscale part of Paris. The Louvre Museum, the largest museum in the world, is within walking distance.

A bit further down the road is the Musée d’Orsay, where you can view some of the most celebrated impressionist paintings in the world, including works by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Edgar Degas.

Of course, the Paris Opera House, Opéra Garnier, is at the heart of this neighborhood. Here, you can enjoy the world-renowned performance of “Swan Lake,” “Carmen” or “The Barber of Seville.”

You’ll also find world-famous theaters like the Comédie Française. Those visiting Paris during the summer can enjoy the free outdoor Opera Festival, which features live music and dance performances.

If you’d like all the benefits of the city but with the cozy feel of a small town, this is it.

Located south of the Seine River, just across from the Louvre, and a short walk to Saint-Chapelle and Notre Dame, this area provides true Parisian culture within the city’s heart.

Featuring a mix of high-end restaurants and charming cafes, as well as plenty of shopping opportunities, Saint Germain is the perfect place to explore on foot and the plate.

For a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience, you definitely won’t miss out on visiting one of the neighborhood’s many excellent local bistros and cafes.

Parisian cafe culture may have been born in Saint Germain. Les Deux Magots, one of the oldest cafes in the area, is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious cup of strong coffee or a glass of French wine while people-watching on an outdoor terrace.

Café de Flore is another beautiful example of a classic Parisian cafe where you can enjoy sophisticated light bites. If you want to get some souvenir hunting done, head over to Le Bon Marché.

Le Bon Marché is Paris’s most upscale department store. It offers everything from designer clothes and shoes to home decor and gourmet foods. This is a premier shopping destination, so come to Paris with an empty suitcase and visit Le Bon Marché.

Saint Germain neighborhood offers wonderful walking tours. There is an excellent food tour complete with champagne. And a guided tour detailing famous writers and artists who visited the area.

Art fans should head over to Musée Delacroix, home to the works of painter Eugène Delacroix, one of France’s most celebrated artists.

If you prefer your art in a more lively format, head over to the world-famous l’Odéon. This historic theater hosts live performances and some of France’s most popular plays.

I highly recommend stopping by the Église de Saint Germain des Prés. Constructed in the 11th Century, this medieval church is an exceptionally beautiful local landmark. Its beautiful stained-glass windows, intricate sculptures and carvings, and stunning marble columns offer some super photo opportunities.

5. Bastille: 11th arrondissement with sections in the 4th and 12th arrondissements

If you are wondering where to stay in Paris with the best nightlife, the Bastille is a great option. Bastille is one of Paris’s liveliest and most exciting neighborhoods. Featuring a wide variety of dance clubs, bars, and music venues, Bastille has every kind of venue for every night out.

The Bastille neighborhood is on the east side of Paris, not too far from the Père Lachaise Cemetery. Although it is far from major attractions like the Eiffel Tower, this area offers much.

Bastille has lovely architecture, several beautiful parks, green spaces, and many shopping and dining options, so you can easily turn a night out into an all-day adventure. It is also nearby several metro stations to take you to the Eiffel Tower.

Check out the Faubourg Saint-Antoine to get a feel for the Bastille. This suburb is where you’ll find the city’s best street art, colorful murals, and some of its most unique shops, where you can find handcrafted trinkets.

The Bastille Market is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the local culture and cuisine for which the Bastille is known. With endless stalls selling everything from flowers to artisanal cheeses and baked goods, this market is where you can find everything you need to sample the best of French gastronomy or grab a cheeky lunch.

The Bastille’s rich history is also why it made the list of places to stay in Paris. The Canal Saint Martin is an artificial waterway that provides fresh water to Paris. Today, you can enjoy a cruise on the canal.

Bastille is also a cultural hotspot. Right within Bastille is the Place de la Bastille, which hosts some of Paris’ most iconic landmarks. In the middle of Place de la Bastille, you can enjoy the statue of the French Revolution’s most famous figure, La Colonne de Juillet. You can also find the crisp, gleaming Opéra Bastille here.

One of my favorite attractions in Bastille (actually Paris) is the Cité Nationale de l’Histoire de l’Immigration. This fascinating museum is where you can learn more about how immigration has shaped modern France and Europe and how culture has evolved.

6. Champs-Élysées: 8th arrondissement

Champs-Élysées is well connected to metro stations and in the heart of tourist attractions, making it an excellent place to stay on your first visit. It has some of the best hotels.

The Champs-Élysées neighborhood is a fantastic location to stay in Paris for many reasons. You can easily access top tourist attractions such as the Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, and Trocadero within walking distance. By booking with GetYourGuide, you can see all these landmarks (and a river cruise) with one ticket—a great option for seeing everything on your first visit.

The Champs-Élysées is also where you will find some of Paris’ most breathtaking views. There are several hotels with views of the Eiffel Tower to choose from (we wrote a list about it).

For a bird’ s-eye view of the entire city, climb the Eiffel Tower and take it all in—get a skip-the-line ticket before you go to avoid the long lines. (It is also included in the City Pass.) If you don’t want to climb the Eiffel Tower, the Champs du Mars is within walking distance and an excellent place to watch the sunset on the Seine.

Also situated within the Champs-Élysées is the Arc de Triomphe. Found at the west end. It is the world’s most famous triumphal arch in the middle of a traffic circle.

From its rich military traditions to its connections with some of France’s most famous artistic minds, there’s no shortage of interesting stories connected to the Arc de Triomphe, so don’t miss out.

On the east end of Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde is a great place for photos and people-watching. It is the largest plaza in Paris and one of Europe’s most famous public squares. Here, you can glimpse the looming Luxor Obelisk and the mesmerizing Fontaines de la Concorde.

Another famous, unmissable landmark making this a great neighborhood to stay in Paris is the Grand Palais, one of the world’s most alluring examples of Art Nouveau architecture.

It’s home to some of the best contemporary art exhibitions in Paris and hosts the odd cultural event. Best of all, in the winter, you can ice skate inside the building!

The Champs-Élysées is also known for its most luxurious department stores. You can spend hours roaming the multi-floored Louis Vuitton or my favorite, Christian Dior. The typical luxury brands are on Avenue Montaigne, and designer boutiques are on Avenue George V.

It is slightly overpriced, given its reputation as a tourist trap, but it is worth seeing if it’s your first time in Paris. There is a Disney store, after all.

Aside from its amazing shopping scene, Champs-Élysées is also home to an endless array of dining and entertainment options. For example, La Durée is a charming patisserie where you’ll find some of the best macarons and desserts on Champs-Élysées – and that’s saying something.

Book a table at Le Fouquet’s for a traditional, five-star Parisian meal. With a delicious menu of French classics cooked to perfection, Le Fouquet’s is where you’ll find luxurious fine dining in Paris since 1899.

If you are wondering where to stay in Paris for a long stay, this is it. I’ve been lucky enough to live in Paris on and off for a while, and by far, the best neighborhood I’ve stayed in is Belleville.

Belleville is a top choice if you stay in Paris for over a month. Coming home to somewhere in Belleville feels like coming home from being in Paris while still in Paris.

Belleville is located in the 20th arrondissement, known for its arts and music scene and crazy clash of cultures. It is an underrated neighborhood for those who want to dig deeper into French culture and experience life as a local.

It’s a breath of fresh air (sometimes literally), and I’ve found that a quiet street in Belleville is the easiest part of Paris to live in – and all sorts of folks live here.

Farther from the Eiffel Tower, Belleville is jam-packed with beautiful public parks, tranquil green spaces, and quiet places where you can pause in Paris, relax, unwind, and appreciate just how beautiful this city is.

Parc de Belleville is a great place to spend an afternoon. The park often hosts free outdoor events throughout the year, and if you get hungry during your stay in Paris, there are a few restaurants on the outskirts.

Belleville is becoming more popular and busy, but the Cimetière du Père Lachaise is still a nice, quiet place to wander alone or arm-in-arm with your partner. This Parisian cemetery is particularly famous as it is the final resting place of many of history’s most famous people, including Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, and Edith Piaf.

Edith Piaf was raised in Belleville too! At the Musee Edith Piaf and her childhood house, you can learn about the roots of this beloved singer, exploring the very rooms in which she grew up and found her love for music.

Anyway, Père Lachaise Cemetery is truly a one-of-a-kind experience where you can learn so much more about what made (and still makes) Paris great – the people. For paranormal fans (or if you feel like spicing up a graveyard), you should hop on this haunted tour of Pere Lachaise cemetery!

However, my favorite park in Belleville has to be Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. It’s possibly the most picturesque park in Paris and well worth the visit during your stay. It’s filled with impressive architecture, craggy rocks, stunning waterfalls, and scenic picture spots so beautiful your Instagram will explode.

Another bonus of staying in Belleville is the abundance of affordable restaurants and cafes where you can grab a bite to eat where the locals eat. It’s really good food, too, without the tourist trap tax.

Rue Denoyez is the perfect place that exemplifies this whole experience. This grungy, cobbled street is home to tons of graffiti art and delicious street food. It’s home to many of Paris’ thriving indie arts and music scenes and some of the city’s best Algerian, Chinese, Ethiopian, Moroccan, Tunisian, and Vietnamese restaurants.

There are some hidden gems in there, but I’d be lying if I said my favorite eatery/watering hole on Rue Denoyez didn’t have a bit of rep. For breakfast, lunch, dinner, or drinks, get to Aux Folies, where you’ll find some of the best crepes and cheapest cocktails in Paris. This classic little local cafe is inside an old 1920s cabaret, and it’s just my favorite hangout spot.

8. Montmartre: 18th arrondissement

We believe Montmartre is the best neighborhood to experience romantic Parisian culture. Perched on top of Butte Hill, overlooking Paris, Montmartre is a great location for a holiday. It is easy to get to Charles de Gaulle airport and well connected to all the sights via the metro station.

But what makes this part of Paris so much more romantic? Well, Montmartre offers endless photo opportunities of its gorgeous views, arty escapades, and beautiful architecture. It also has Le Mur des Je t’aime – the Wall of Love, commonly known as the “I Love You Mural.”

Staying in Montmartre while visiting Paris is a great way to experience a different side of Paris than what most tourists see. You can buy local art at the Place du Tertre or dine at La Maison Rose, a historic cafe.

You can also go on a walking tour to learn the famous history of this beautiful neighborhood. (A walking tour is also included in the City Pass). Walking through Place du Tertre is like actually walking on hallowed ground in the art world. Painters like Picasso and Braque actually lived in an apartment on this very square.

Getting around Paris from Montmartre is easy, thanks to dozens of metro lines. While you can’t walk to the Eiffel Tower or Arc de Triomphe, the location of Montmartre provides excellent views of the Eiffel Tower from several restaurants and hotels.

Also, with the City Pass, you can take advantage of the hop-on, hop-off bus tour that picks up from Montmartre and brings you to the Eiffel Tower and other top spots.

Montmartre is also located near South Pigalle, another Paris neighborhood popular for its nightlife and the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret! Many people confuse Montmartre with South Pigalle, where all the cabarets are. They are very close to each other, so Moulin Rouge is within walking distance.

Art lovers and photographers, in particular, will love Montmartre. There is a rich history of famous artists coming here for inspiration and the opportunity for a snapshot on almost every corner.

And your voyage through the art scene in Montmartre is just beginning. For Salvador Dali fans, be sure to check out Espace Dali, where you can explore the work of this renowned surrealist artist. Located in a stunning mansion with incredible views of Paris, this museum is where you’ll find some of Dali’s most famous works, including The Hallucinogenic Toreador and Leda Atomica.

I’d also pay Musée de Montmartre a visit. Not only does it possess a wonderful collection of artwork that dates back to the 17th Century, but this lovely museum also explores how Montmartre has evolved over the years, giving me a deeper appreciation for this artsy neighborhood.

If there’s one thing I’ve always appreciated about Montmartre, it’s the Sacré-Cœur Basilica. Again, this place is a prime example of why Montmartre is so photogenic.

Located high on a hill overlooking the rest of the city sits the one-and-only Sacré-Cœur Basilica. Every time I see this gleaming white-domed cathedral in person, it never fails to take my breath away.

I’d actually recommend skipping the top of the Eiffel Tower and going here. You can climb to the top of Sacré-Cœur and enjoy the best Eiffel Tower view in the city from Sacré-Cœur. Bring your camera!

But Montmartre offers much more than just a beautiful church. Plenty of charming outdoor markets to pick up fresh produce and wonderful restaurants exist. It’s also a great spot for a cheese and wine tour of the city.

If you’ve got the time or you’re looking for a quiet place to walk, head over to Montmartre Cemetery. I love a good graveyard – you’ll love this one too. Located on the outskirts of Montmartre, this sprawling cemetery is where you’ll find an eclectic mix of famous historical figures and notable Parisians.

From painters and poets to world-famous musicians and politicians, you can learn more about some of the most significant people in French history on a walking tour of this fascinating cemetery.

Quartier Latin (or the Latin Quarter) is an excellent place to stay in Paris. This quaint neighborhood has the best hotels, wonderful bistros, and picturesque winding streets. You can even take a selfie walking tour (included in the Go City Pass).

This fantastic neighborhood is where you’ll find the very best of everything that Paris has to offer, from incredible museums and lively marketplaces to world-class restaurants and beautiful parks. Located in the city’s heart and a haven for Paris’s oldest streets, this neighborhood embodies the city’s spirit.

One of the reasons the Latin Quarter is on our list of places to stay in Paris is its location. It is just south of France’s most visited free tourist attraction, the Notre Dame Cathedral on the Île de la Cité. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has drawn travelers from around the world for centuries with its incredible architecture and stunning stained glass windows.

Unfortunately, since the massive fire in 2019, Notre Dame Cathedral has been closed to visitors while it undergoes repairs. However, you can enjoy more than one major tourist attraction within walking distance. The Île de la Cité has wonderful cafes overlooking Notre Dame without all the crowds.

And Saint Chapelle, a stained-glass lovers’ paradise, is next door. But that’s not all. You can also walk to the Panthéon. Set in the heart of the Quartier Latin, this beautiful building was built between 1758 and 1790 as a church before being turned into a mausoleum.

While you’re in this neck of the woods, stop by the world-famous bookstore Shakespeare & Company. Unlike every other bookstore in Paris, this famous English-only bookshop is where you can find an incredible collection of books.

Secret tip: avoid the long line waiting to enter the new-age section of the bookstore. The “old and rare” section is next door, which has cheap used books and very expensive rare editions.

When you get hungry, head to the famous Le Café Tournon. This famous little nook has been around for decades. I had my favorite croissant ever right here.

While there are several metro stations nearby, the Latin Quarter is best explored out and about on foot. Wandering through the Quarter’s bustling markets where you can pick up everything from freshly baked baguettes to designer clothes, is a heap of fun.

Then, you might head to the quai along the Seine River, where you can enjoy an incredible city view while sipping on a glass of wine – while you’re here, book a river cruise. Just get out and explore!

If you’re looking for an area to stay with kids, this is a great option. In the neighborhood, you’ll find the Musée National du Moyen Age, one of the best museums in the city. Here, you can learn about Medieval France. The family can learn everything from tapestries and sculptures to medieval weapons and armor.

Another kid-friendly activity is touring Jardin des Plantes, one of Europe’s most famous and jaw-dropping botanical gardens. This expansive park is home to some of the city’s most beautiful and eclectic gardens. If one park isn’t enough, Jardin du Luxembourg is right around the corner with its fountains, gardens, and ponds.

You can spend hours wandering through the many paths here. Plus, with plenty of space for kids to run around and play, it’s the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon in the city with your family on a sunny day. And if you decide to visit between June and September, your Paris would be incomplete without spending some time at the Paris Jazz Festival!
